“They hate the one who reproves in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks with integrity… But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” — Amos 5:10, 24
Two days ago comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show was taken off the air without warning. The timing and context are deeply troubling. Kimmel had recently mocked President Trump—lightly, comically, as he often does. But this time, it seems the President didn’t like the joke. And now the show is gone.
This may sound like a small media story. It is not.
This is a dangerous escalation in an already fragile democracy. It signals a government willing to punish dissent—not through formal laws, but through backdoor pressure on corporations. It suggests that keeping powerful people happy is now more important than protecting free speech. It sends a message to every journalist, artist, preacher, and neighbor: Watch what you say. Someone is listening.
Across history, authoritarian leaders have followed this playbook. They don’t just control armies or courts—they control what can be said aloud. Criticism becomes dangerous. Jokes become threats. The truth is: Kimmel’s joke isn’t what broke the system—it’s what revealed it.
The Bible has something to say about this.
The prophet Amos warned us long ago: “They hate the one who reproves in the gate…” In other words, they despise those who speak honestly in public spaces. The prophets knew this pattern. When kings grow corrupt, the first casualty is always the messenger who calls him out. And soon after, the people suffer too.
Jesus faced it himself. He spoke clearly about greed, injustice, and hypocrisy. And for that, religious and political leaders conspired to silence him.
Silencing public voices is not new. But it is always dangerous.
Let’s be honest: this moment frightens many of us. Even some who support Trump are alarmed. Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, no stranger to controversy, publicly condemned the decision to remove Kimmel. Even he knows: this is not how a free society behaves.1
I will remind us once again: We are not powerless. We can still speak. We must speak, especially at the ballot box. But we must also pay attention. This isn’t about whether you like Jimmy Kimmel. It’s about whether any of us are allowed to question power without being punished.
Authoritarianism treats critique not as feedback, but as infection.
When they silence the comedians, we are all at risk.
We are in this together,
Cameron
Reflection Questions
Have you ever felt silenced by fear, pressure, or power?
When have you used your voice to speak up, even when it was hard?
What helps you discern when and how to speak with integrity?
A Prayer for the Day
For the Ones Who Speak
God of the burning bush and the still, small voice, When the world silences dissent, Let Your Spirit whisper louder than fear. When jokes disappear and prophets are exiled, Remind us that truth-telling is holy. Give us the courage to speak, The humility to listen, The grace to forgive, And the clarity to know That silence, when unjust, is not peace. Amen.
Spiritual Practice
Courageous Speech
Today, notice where you are tempted to stay silent. Ask yourself:
Is there something that needs to be said?
Is there someone who needs to be defended?
Is there a space where speaking up could create more honesty, healing, or fairness?
Speak gently. But speak.
Our future depends on a people who still know how.
