“Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far off; truth stumbles in the public square, and uprightness cannot enter.” — Isaiah 59:14
Yesterday, former FBI Director James Comey was indicted by a federal grand jury on two felony counts—obstruction and lying to Congress.1 On its face, this may seem unremarkable. After all, Comey is no saint. His decisions caused real harm to public trust, especially around the 2016 election and policing practices. He has long been a controversial figure.
But something more troubling is unfolding.
Comey’s indictment follows months of direct pressure from President Trump on the Department of Justice. Independent prosecutors had previously declined to press charges. That decision was overridden after loyalists were installed in key positions. Now, long after the statute of limitations was thought to have expired, the charges have resurfaced. This is not about justice. It’s about vengeance.
We must name it for what it is.
When the rule of law is bent to serve personal or political agendas, even against people we dislike, we all lose, not because we’re defending the accused, but because we’re defending the principle that justice must not be weaponized.
All of our sacred traditions hold a deeper vision of justice than punishment or performance. In Hebrew scripture, justice (tzedek) is not just legal procedure; it is relational integrity. It is the healing of what has been harmed, the righting of what has gone off course. Jesus, too, challenged legalism that masked cruelty. He healed on the Sabbath, touched the untouchable, and confronted the power systems that pretended righteousness while crucifying the innocent. The Qur’an teaches that Allah commands justice (adl), compassion, and generosity, holding all to account with mercy and equity. Buddhist traditions remind us that when attachment to domination overwhelms right relationship, the wheel of suffering turns more quickly.
In every lineage, the message is clear: justice is sacred, not because it props up power, but because it protects life. It restores the conditions for dignity.
When political leaders demand prosecutions to settle scores, when prosecutors comply, when courts become tools of spectacle, we must not look away. In that moment, the integrity of the entire system begins to rot from within.
This is how authoritarianism metastasizes, not in sweeping gestures, but in small, televised performances. In show trials. In loyalty oaths. In the slow corrosion of norms that once held a semblance of moral ground.
So we come, as people of faith and conscience, to a deeper question: How do we stay tethered to our highest values in a time of institutional collapse?
We start by remembering that we are not the first to walk this road.
Shiphrah and Puah, the Hebrew midwives, defied Pharaoh’s genocidal orders, not with grand declarations, but by quietly protecting life. Jesus stood before Pilate, silent in the face of mock justice, yet unwavering in truth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) endured years of persecution, refusing to return coercion with coercion. Countless mystics and freedom fighters have chosen integrity over ease, fidelity over fear.
Their example gives us courage. Not to escape these times, but to meet them with clarity. To say: This is wrong. To say: We do not consent. To say: Justice is not yours to corrupt.
We are living through a dangerous time. The scaffolding of democracy is being taken apart before our eyes.
So today, pay attention. Refuse numbness. Remember who you are and what you are here to protect.
Do not let them turn the law into theater without someone standing in the balcony and shouting: “This is not justice. This is performance.”
Let that someone be you.
Let it be us.
Let it be now.
We are in this together,
Cameron
Reflection Questions
Where in your life or community have you witnessed justice being manipulated or distorted?
What helps you stay grounded when systems meant to protect begin to betray?
How can you embody integrity in this moment—especially when doing so feels costly?
A Prayer for the Day
A Prayer for the Integrity of Justice
O Spirit who dwells beyond and within, we stand today at the edge of what is and what should never be. The wheels of justice are grinding out of rhythm— rusted by power, warped by fear. We grieve the misuse of courts for political ends. We grieve the erosion of sacred trust. And yet, we remember: Justice is not a system. It is a sacred call. May we rise today not with vengeance, but with fierce clarity and moral courage. May we refuse to look away, and also refuse to surrender to despair. Let us be keepers of integrity, tenders of the common good, and protectors of the vulnerable. Even now—especially now— may we remember that our hope is not naïve. It is resistance. It is clarity. It is love refusing to die. Amen.
Spiritual Practice
A Daily Act of Integrity
Today, choose one act—however small—that restores alignment between your values and your actions.
It might be speaking a difficult truth.
It might be apologizing.
It might be writing a letter to an official or organizing a gathering.
It might be setting a boundary.
It might be making art that bears witness.
Whatever it is, let it be your sacrament of resistance, your reminder that even in a corrupted system, we can still move with honor, truth, and care.
