Your column has become the way I start my day. Though I’m no longer a churchgoer or a practicing Christian I find your perspective so grounding and your daily prayers so uplifting. Thank you from one who may not know where she stands on “God” but who believes strongly in and longs deeply for a moral universe. Your work matters.
I am your Canadian sister and the DECISION of the Supreme Court Re- the Voting Right Act saddened me...even scared me...you are a prophetic voice- keep speaking and writing...I pray that the prophetic voice within each of us cry out against this unjust decision .
The movement is not slow anymore. Starting with Reagan America was the tortoise but, with Trump, the hare. For over 10 years he has shown America who he is and America has largely ignored him, in that sense. Now, Trump and his Reich have taken over and Americans are still just watching. The USA is in an abyss that gets deeper daily. When will America stand up and save itself from itself???
Take heart. Look around, G Charles MacDonald, and see the green shoots rising. People are waking up.
Like another column Rev. Trimble wrote about bamboo, which grows largely incrementally below ground for the first few years until it bursts out in unmistakable and unstoppable growth, the movement created by "We the People" is growing. No Kings 1, 2, 3, and tomorrow's May Day protest are providing community support in new ways. In the short term, things may appear bleak, but things are going very badly for Trump and the GOP. It's only a matter of time. In the meantime, good people are bravely doing whatever they can to tug on the arc of justice and ensure a future where "liberty and justice for all" defines who we are as a nation.
Monday, I returned from a trip to a much older nation. People I met looked at me with compassion and told stories of their past leaders who misused power, yet they are a strong democracy today. The US is a relatively young nation. We have potential to grow closer to the dream of our ancestors if we do not give up! I am not giving up.
Please do not give up hope. The time of renewal is coming.
The prophets described injustice as a moral failure with real human cost. 'Trampling on the poor' wasn't Amos being dramatic. It was him being precise. The legal language around voting rights rulings does a lot of work to make the human cost feel abstract. It isn't
THANK YOU!! When I heard that SCOTUS news, I hit my first real moment of desolation ~ that this is just too big and I’m just too tired to continue. And then I read this! Grateful that you pulled me back from the brink! ❤️

Two words: John. Lewis.

Amen!!!
Amen. This is purposeful, and it is wrong.
