Thanks for this and for all your writing! Do you know Anne Lamott's work? She talks about doing the next right thing, which feels like a close cousin. https://annelamott.substack.com/
Ditto! Thank you. I offer another resource for others, although I am sure you (Cameron) are very familiar with it: Margaret Wheatley's "So Far from Home: lost and found in our brave new world." (2012) I had the pleasure of attending her lecture in Seattle for this book's release, and was deeply gratified by her message. Her "Path for Warriors" continues to guide my path. Specifically, she writes that to maintain our own humanity we must choose to "embody values and practices that offer us meaningful lives now...and... let go of needing to impact the future." Furthermoe choosing to "delight when our work achieves good results yet let go of needing others to adopt our successes." (There's much more--read the book!) To me this says do the work, whatever it is, as long as you feel a big Yes from God, and let that be the only motivator. My job is to be God's hands, feet, & voice. To keep my window clean so God can shine through me. Surrendering my will constantly!
This sermon follows the ideas and practices in the book, The Sailboat Church: Helping Your Church Rethink Its Mission and Practice by Joan S. Gray. Our hopes and efforts are guided by the Holy Spirit at the helm of the sailboat here and now. Excellent book. Lettie
I have been thinking a lot of about expectations versus hope; this gave me some clarity in what I have been struggling with. Surrendering the idea you have control of the future is hard. Thank you.
Thank you dear Cameron for this meditation on hope. I offer two resources for expanding our access to the sort of hope about which John of the Cross and you write: The Spirit of Hope by Byung Chul Han and Josh Schrei's The Emerald Podcast episode called Carry that Weight: Mythic Burdens and Cosmic Supports. https://www.themythicbody.com/podcast/carry-that-weight-on-mythic-burdens-and-cosmic-supports/
Yes we are in this together. Holding hope and faith! 🙏🏻

Our task, to try, trust.
Outcomes, none of our business.
Together we tread.

Thank you for the work you do and your Beginner's Bible Study Guide as it's truly been life saving for me
"We are not asked to guarantee the future. We are asked to participate in it." Hmmm, something to ponder. Thanks for sharing this.
Rev. Trimble, My spiritual director recommended you and I am so grateful for you and your daily words of Grace and wisdom!
