YES! We have so much to learn about compassion from our two-legged and four-legged companions. Last year during a contemplative practice series offered through our church we took a trip to visit a farm that cares for injured animals. We were invited to spend time in the open barn to mindfully be with the animals who were in various stages of physical and emotional healing there. At one point we witnessed the entire community of animals including two horses, a donkey and 3 sheep move quickly to surround another large horse with an abcess on his hoof. That horse had separated himself from the others in a corner of the large barn, clearly in pain. When a well-meaning but unaware unknown human visitor moved too close to the injured horse, every other animal immediately rushed to encircle him. They created protective shield around him. It was beautiful to witness and sent a clear message that these are sentient loving creatures who know that being with one another in their suffering is essential for all of our healing.
