The war in Gaza is NOT over, Cameron. Genocide continues. There are fewer bombings yet Palestinians continue to be shot, humanitarian aid limited, Palestinians are homeless living in freezing, rainy flimsy tents, settlers are daily taking land, destroying olive orchards and the livelihood of Palestinians. Genocide continues. Why is the Palestinian crisis so hard for you to see or acknowledge? Read Amnesty International’s reports, Churches for Middle East, Doctos Without Borders.

Thank you for writing and for naming your anguish about the genocide unfolding in Gaza. I share your horror and heartbreak. I have written about this in past meditations, some perhaps before you subscribed, and I am certainly not blind to the unimaginable suffering and cruelty being inflicted on our Palestinian sisters and brothers.

In this space, I write while holding relationship with an interfaith community that carries deep histories, trauma, and conviction around this conflict. I try to speak with care for the full humanity of all involved, even when that restraint feels insufficient in the face of unbearable suffering. Sometimes I get that balance right; sometimes I do not.

You may not agree with this approach, and I respect that. It is, however, how I try to stand in the world and steward this particular community. I do want you to know that I see and honor your advocacy, and I appreciate the moral urgency you bring to this moment.

I really appreciate personally your reminder at the end about how we view those opposing our concerns. I struggle a lot with the increased epithets, derision and negative descriptors used to talk about Trump and Company, mainly because they just do not feel right to me inside. Wishing he was dead doesn't reflect well on my understanding of loving one another, even those we really do not like. I need this reminder a lot and am starting the new year with intentional recognition of what such talk does to my spirit, even as I intend to be loud and insistent about how cruel and unjust those actions are. What I really want is for Trump to have a Damascus Road experience like Paul! Trump himself says he does not wish his enemies well at all, I never want to be that empty of empathy.

Thank you for your response Cameron and I pray you reflect further on your position on Gaza.

1 You said the US played a significant role in “ending the war.” I believe that statement is false for several reasons. The war was changed a bit (less large scale bombing) but far from ended. The US has continued to supply weapons and technology that kill Palestinians and continue the war. TheUS has supported Israel in spite of massive human rights violations such as the detention and imprisonment of Palestinians without due process for years.

The Israeli IDF support of violent settlers who kill, beat, take homes, destroy property of Palestinians continues daily.

Israel continues to steal Palestinian land, set up intolerable check points and Deny passage and travel to Palestinians.

The war continues every day!!!

And yesterday on the news we hear Israel will deny at least 37 humanitarian organizations (including Doctors Without Borders) from entrance to Gaza. The Netanyahu government is brilliant in finding untold ways to carry out the genocide of Palestinians. There is no doubt that the extermination of Palestinians is the goal and the takeover of all Palestinian land in violation of every international agreement.

2. You speak of a desire to understand the trauma and faith of all parties. Yes, I agree. There is inherited trauma, no doubt, amongst Jews yet that does not excuse genocide.

Zionism is a political agenda, the making of a Jewish apartheid state, where not all shave equal right. Cameron, You are able to call out our current MAGA white Christian nationalist government for the horrors it is committing. Trump and Netanyahu speak from the same values.

Judaism, versus Zionism, is a beautiful religion not tied to a government but to a faith of core values of healing the world , loving God and one another. So many faithful spiritual Jewish leaders are protesting and horrified by the use of genocide by their government.

Zionism is antithetical to the Jewish faith just like Christian nationalism is antithetical to Christianity.

An interfaith movement United in shared values that are anti-war and pro love of each other and the God of us all s the way forward. So be interfaith. Of course. Being strong against Zionism does not mean anti-Semitic or anti-Jewish but rather in support of true Judaism just like being against Trump’s policies does not make us anti-Christian but rather aligned with the true spirit of Christ.

Cameron, your posts are deep spiritual food for me. I am SO grateful for you. On this one issue, I encourage you to have the same courage and clarity you demonstrate in other arenas. I thank God for you!
